Celebration caps six weeks of Future Grace campaign
by Chris Turner
The Future Grace Phase Two building campaign began six weeks ago with a challenge and ended last night with a music celebration featuring singers/songwriters who are members of Grace Community Church. In between was a strong call to discipleship for the next three years and years beyond
The concert featured David Spencer, Ben Shive, Laurianne Cates, Wendy Wills, Josh Wilson and Paul Bogart and, as Pastor Scott Patty said, was a time to celebrate God’s faithfulness to Grace and the congregation’s commitment to build for the purpose of discipleship. Patty also announced an additional $60,000 had been committed yesterday toward the Future Grace campaign.

A seven-week series about following Jesus Christ in the world. Discipleship involves a leader (Jesus), followers (Christians), and a way of living (all that Jesus commanded). Sunday sermons and Wednesday evening Community Group discussions are devoted to this topic.

On Sunday, May 11th at 6 p.m., we will have the Future Grace Celebration Concert to celebrate Future Grace and all that it means for our congregation. During the concert, you will have the opportunity to see David Spencer, Ben Shive, Wendy Wills, Laurianne Cates, Josh Wilson, and Paul Bogart perform some of their songs with a full band. The remainder of this post is an interview with Josh Wilson.
Paul Bogart was raised in a small town just north of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Growing up in the rodeo world he competed nationally in rodeos and American Quarter Horse shows both in the team roping and calf roping events. Along with rodeo, music became a big part of Paul’s life especially within his family.
During college Paul started taking his music career more seriously and began touring across Oklahoma, Texas, and Missouri playing in venues such as “The Cains Ballroom” and “The Lazy E Arena.” After graduating from Rogers State University, he packed his bags and moved to Nashville in June of 2005 in pursuit of a career as a singer/songwriter. As a song writer, Paul’s music has been greatly influenced by the rodeo world and Christian values. It is this style of country music that truly characterizes Paul Bogart and the lyrics that people grow to love.

Josh Wilson, originally from Lubbock, Texas, graduated from Belmont University in 2006 and recorded 2 independent albums while in school. Shortly after, he signed with Sparrow Records and his debut album entitled “Trying to Fit the Ocean In a Cup” was released April 29th. Christa Banister, of Christianity Today, describes the album: “Superb songwriting and varied textures combine to make Josh Wilson’s debut memorable.”

Wendy Wills has written great songs, put out several CDs, and blessed the church with meaningful worship music throughout her career as a singer/songwriter. Her most recent national “hit” is “The Glorious Impossible,” which was recorded by the Gaither Vocal Band. In 1998, she and her husband Dave, along with their two children, Jed and Thea moved to Nashville from Wisconsin. She doesn’t even pretend to be a Southerner, and the whole family is very proud of their heritage.

Laurianne is a native Nashvillian (well, Franklin really) who shares her music regularly in Nashville’s music scene. She has just released a great EP titled “Something Real,” and I’ve had it in my car since she released it (meaning it’s one of about five albums I’m currently listening to).

Ben came to Nashville from St. Louis to attend Belmont University. After graduation, he soon became a right hand man for Andrew Peterson, a well-known grassroots Christian artist. It wasn’t long before he was producing Andrew’s records, playing piano on other artist’s albums, and producing more CDs. He lives south of town with his wife, Beth, and their three kids, Jude, Lucy, and Ezra.

A seasoned performer at the age of 25, David has shared the stage with Pat Green, Better Than Ezra, and Glen Phillips (of Toad and the Wet Sprocket) - just to name a few. Spencer’s list of performances continues to grow, with hundreds of clubs, concert halls, and colleges now under his belt. And when he’s not touring, he is writing for other artists and wearing his producer cap in his new studio, directing a symphony of sounds for other up and coming singer/songwriters.
